I love the term ‘bless’…. God bless America, bless you (sneezing), blessings (greeting), God bless that soul (southern style)!
In your prayer time, how do you ask God to bless you? Your needs, wants, desires? Do you ask God to bless Israel, and why? What about our family and friends?
If we were to use this passage in our prayer life, what would happen?
If we were to expect this passage to exist in our daily life, what would happen?
If someone lights up in the face when they see you or have an instant smile when they see you, what do you think you have from them?
I would like to think… You have favor with them…
I love picking up my kids from Day Care! When they see me coming they get this really BIG smile and come running to me yelling ‘BABBA’!
If we can get that kind of favor from our family and friends, imagine what kind of favor we could get from God Himself. The kind of favor that shines and even smiles!
What kind of favor is this?
The story of Joseph, from the Bible, had this godly favor upon his life
After sold as a slave in Egypt, God showed Joseph favor
Genesis 39:2–5 The Lord was with Joseph so that he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master. When his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord gave him success in everything he did, Joseph found favor in his eyes and became his attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household, and he entrusted to his care everything he owned. From the time he put him in charge of his household and of all that he owned, the Lord blessed the household of the Egyptian because of Joseph. The blessing of the Lord was on everything Potiphar had, both in the house and in the field.
And just when circumstances got even worse, still Joseph had God’s favor
Genesis 39:20–23 Joseph’s master took him and put him in prison, the place where the king’s prisoners were confined. But while Joseph was there in the prison, the Lord was with him; he showed him kindness and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden. So the warden put Joseph in charge of all those held in the prison, and he was made responsible for all that was done there. The warden paid no attention to anything under Joseph’s care because the Lord was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did.
As you read on you see God’s favor over the life of Joseph. To the point that he became second in command over all of Egypt.
And at the end of his life, he realized how God’s favor had blessed him to help save many lives
Genesis 50:19–21 But Joseph said to them, “Don’t be afraid. Am I in the place of God? You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives. So then, don’t be afraid. I will provide for you and your children.” And he reassured them and spoke kindly to them.
Jesus as a young child had this godly favor over Him
Luke 2:40 And the Child grew and became strong in spirit, filled with wisdom; and the grace of God was upon Him.
At the start of manhood, age 12, He also continued to grow in this favor
Luke 2:52 And Jesus kept increasing in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.
At the beginning of His ministry, age 30, He was so favored by God that God Himself said He was pleased with Him.
Luke 3:22 and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you, I am well pleased.”You can even say He made God smile!
In the middle of His ministry when Jesus was transfigured on the mountain, God spoke, saying this is my Son whom I have chosen, listen to Him.
What are our motives in getting this favor and what are God’s?
God’s favor does not always lead us ‘beside quiet waters’, but will take us into deserts full of difficult situations and testings.
God in His mercy blesses us, and His face shines upon us, by this we make His Ways known, and the nations receive salvation! WOW!!!
Psalm 67 prayer was given by God to His people. It was a priestly prayer!
Numbers 6:24–26 The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace (not to keep you away from harmful situations but preserve you through them).”
Psalms 67 was a prophetic word for the ‘Great Commission’, given by Jesus to go into all the nations and spread the gospel!
So this blessing of God’s favor over our lives is to prosper us in the lives we are supposed to live for Him. We limit God’s favor by trying to live out our own lives according to our own plans. Our motives for God’s favor should be aligned with God’s motives to give us His favor. That we may bring His ways to the world.
What are the fruits of this godly favor?
This should answer the question of ‘what are His ways’?
To bring salvation to all nations!
Joseph used God’s favor to bring a form of ‘salvation’ to the surrounding nations as well as God’s chosen people from all dying from starvation.
Jesus used God’s favor to bring eternal salvation to humanity. So that we would not die in our sin.
Not only that, Heavenly Father gave us His favor to have a personal relationship with Him. He already takes care of our every need if we let Him. We don’t have to ask God to bless us and give us favor to simply supply our daily needs and wants, but also, to give us favor no matter what circumstance we are in. So that His face would shine upon us and our lives would show others God’s Way and finally, salvation would come to all nations!
Again, what are God’s ways that we would shine?
Psalms 67:3–7 May the peoples praise you, God; may all the peoples praise you. May the nations be glad and sing for joy, for you rule the peoples with equity and guide the nations of the earth. May the peoples praise you, God; may all the peoples praise you. The land yields its harvest; God, our God, blesses us. May God bless us still, so that all the ends of the earth will fear him.
God’s ways have God’s love painted all over it. Whatever He does, He does out of perfect love. A love that everyone needs.
We have God’s favor! But what are we doing with it? God wants to shine His face upon us, showing that He approves of us as He approved of Jesus. Let’s show the world God’s Ways and then see God bring salvation to the world!!!
We have the same Spirit that was upon Joseph and that Jesus was filled with and that empowered the 1st church!
We have the same Spirit and the same favor!
